A kitchen garden is a small area of a garden or a raised bed where you can quickly harvest herbs, veggies, and fruits (like berries) for your daily use in the kitchen. Unlike your regular garden where you grow potatoes and other long term crops to harvest later, a kitchen garden is usually close to the house, so it can be easily accessed to pick just enough for your daily needs. Adding it into your landscape with raised beds or stone borders or paths adds beauty and accessibility to the kitchen raised bed.
Imagine walking right outside your door and picking just a little fresh oregano or rosemary for that sauce or stew for dinner, or maybe some mint for your tea or blackberries for your breakfast yogurt or dessert.
A perennial kitchen garden adds in veggies, herbs, and fruit that come back every year.
The Benefits of Adding Perennials to Your Kitchen Garden
Regular greens in my garden bolt quickly when it gets hot in early summer. I augment those with perennial greens – dock, sorrel, and plantain. Perennial are slightly more bitter than annual greens, but they add a variety to your salads and dishes. I add Bloody Dock sorrel to my salads for a unique look and a slight lemony taste that goes well with vinaigrette.
Oregano in the raised bed. Even in November, I still have some fresh oregano.
